Does Your Child Actually Have ADHD?
|
Does your Child Actually Have ADHD? Many parents are a little confused about ADHD and the treatments that are currently available. I mean do you know exactly what your child needs? Which treatment is right for your child and how do you narrow down you choices? If you are a parent with these types of questions the best advice you can get is do a little research on your own. Then find out if your child actually has ADHD, these days' doctors tend to be very quick to identify a child as having ADHD. The first place to start is to get an accurate diagnosis. Take your time and search the web there is a lot of good information out there that will help you figure out if it is time to visit your doctor. If you feel that your child exhibits the symptoms of ADHD then you should make an appointment and discuss your concerns with your pediatrician. Some of the most obvious signs that your child may have ADHD are that they are getting in more trouble in school than is typical for a child their age, if you have other children you may notice a stark difference between their temperaments and behaviors. Make sure you bring up these concerns with your pediatrician. Once you have made the appointment with your doctor write down all your questions and concerns, that way you make sure that you get all the answers to your questions. Your child will most likely need to have a physical examination done. Once the doctor has completed this stage he or she will consult with the other medical professionals that specialize in ADHD diagnosis. Your pediatrician will then probably sit down with you and your child and ask a group of questions to see how each of you answers the questions. Tell your child they should answer the questions truthfully and not to just give what they think might be a "correct" answer. If further testing is needed your child may be asked to do a test that requires them to listen and respond. No two children are the same and getting an accurate assessment of their condition can vary greatly. Many times a learning disability like dyslexia is the cause for the behavioral problems, children with these disabilities often times act out inappropriately. The symptoms of ADHD and learning disabilities are very similar and that may require a few extra tests to help clarify what your child actually has. To rule out a learning disability your child will take a standardized test with age appropriate questions, then experts will take a look at it and interpret the results. If it turns out that your child does have ADHD you and your doctor will sit down and determined what course of treatment you feel will be best for your child. Make sure that you discuss with your doctors alternative treatments that are available, there are many out there that will either eliminate or greatly reduce the amount of medication that your child may need. |
